There's never a good time to be sick when you're self-employed. I myself have a propensity for head colds. The kind that start with a sore throat then move to my sinuses and sometimes into my chest. And they always seem to strike right in the middle of busy season when you can afford them the least. Right now I'm afflicted with my 2nd bout in one months time. Urgh. Enough already!

Being a self-employed wedding photographer makes it pretty much impossible to put my life on hold to get well. Weddings are non-negotiable. I'm showing up unless I'm dead on the side of the street or physically chained to a hospital bed. I'm also committed to showing up for portrait shoots. There's no better time to reschedule during busy season and clients put a lot of work into preparing for them. But my strategy when sick is to put off everything else that isn't essential in favor of rest and beating my nemesis FAST. I employ some powerful weapons in the fight -- many of them shown in the photo above. It's funny when I post about being sick on Facebook or Twitter, I inevitably get a slew of comments with everyone's favorite remedy. Apparently there are a gazillion that I haven't tried that are foolproof.

I recently cancelled a consultation meeting with a potential client because I'm sick and knew that I needed to conserve my energy for my upcoming shoots. The client called and left a voicemail that said she wasn't interested in rescheduling because she's looking for a photographer who will exhibit more "enthusiasm and reliability." Huh. Odd that I would be low on those qualities SEEINGS I'M SICK! Oh well. You can't win them all. But apparently there's no good time to be sick when self-employed. I'm just not allowed.

Feel free to leave all non-nasty tasting remedies in the comments below. I will prevail!!
