jessica - I felt the same way. But.... reading to my kids at night with the light off and the lit up screen of my kindle fire converted me! Now not only do I read more books to my kids at bedtime (without headaches from poor lighting but I increased my own book count by 50% It really is an awesome device! Even my mother in law who was dead against it a year ago just purchased a nook lol
Rachel - I'm 32 and used to feel the same way, but my husband went ahead and bought one for me anyway and now I LOVE it!! Now I don't know how I liked without one. Last week a neighbor lent me a book and after reading with a Kindle for over a year I was so used to its convenience that I went ahead and bought the Kindle version of the same book!! I can never go back...
jess - I LOVE MY KINDLE! i still buy paper books and read with my kindle.
Katie Bradshaw - I'm only 19 and I'm in the SAME boat you are !! Don't call yourself and old geezer !!! Kindles, like you said, destroy the purpose of reading & books. Don't people like to read before bed to become TIRED, how's that going to work with a bright light shinning in your face ?? What freaks me out, is how books are becoming extinct, when I have kids, this is what I'll be made fun of for, "what mom ?! what the heck is a textbook ?!"...oh boy !
Eunice Brownlee - I too, will never own a Kindle. I like the way books smell, and feel and look. Not to mention that one of my favorite outings of all time is perusing the stacks of a used book store to discover new authors. You can't do that with a Kindle.
Kerensa - I can't agree more, I can buy books on my iPad and I've been close a few times. But then something stops me. I get all nostalgic for turning a page and the mix of emotions as I near the end of a REAL book! I too hope they never die off.
Leah G - Before I got my Kindle, I honestly thought that it would take a lot for me to fall in like with it. But for me practicality won out. I still love my real paper, but I also appreciate not needing to figure out where to shelve one more book.
Kirsten Leah - AMEN. I was actually going to do a post similar to this when I review the book I just finished. I'm 21 and have already rejected that technology--don't go feeling old just yet. :)
Tiffany Deming - Dean and I TOTALLY agree!! :) 'Real Books' is one of the things we chose to put on our website under the 'Stuff We Heart' section. I'm hoping that there are enough of us book lovers out there so that they truly won't become obsolete (and if so, we'll have to stage a revolution a la Fahrenheit 451)! Book lovers unite! ;)
Courtney Howell - I agree!!!! I hope books never go away...I don't want to have to explain to my children what a "book" is--no thanks! I guess I am an old geezer as well :)
Karen (Mikols) Bonar - And taking a book into the tub is less risky than a Kindle! I'm with you!
Brooke - I got a Nook Color for Christmas and lovvvvve it! :D
Deborah Zoe - I'm so with you Melissa! I just love being able to hold a real book in my hands!
Sandra Jackson - I thought I was the only one "Kindle Sucks" bumper sticker. :) Okay, I don't have the bumper sticker, but I do love books! I love the smell and feel of them. I so enjoy the anticipation of turning the page. I tried to download a book on my laptop and couldn't stand it! I'm not a Kindle kind of gal.
After reading this post, I'm saving all of my books for my grandkids. :)
Hannah - I am with you on this one! Nothing like curling up on the couch and reading a good old fashioned book!!
Gail - Oh Melissa...kindred souls on this topic. The other day I was at the library and it suddenly dawned on me that if I'm blessed enough to some day have children, they may never know what a library is!! The thought saddened me so much I had to push it out of my mind because libraries and bookstores? THEY ARE MY HAPPY PLEASE!
Signed,
A fellow Kindle loather
Michael - I love books in their papery form, too. The smell, the feel, the fonts, the cover art on some. But there's a green factor to the Kindle and other tech that is having me reconsider the Kindle (and its screen is a plus over the iPad). Also, I was traveling the other day and I usually bring three or four books. With my camera equipment, I brought one, due the the weight limits on flying. I only wish I had a Kindle to lighten the load. Books can get heavy!
christina moodie - Agreed!! I am only 21 and I totally agree with you on this one. I love books. I love holding a books and being able to go back to the book and look at my notes in it. I will not get a kindle.
Amanda - I'm with you! I LOVE to hold a book. Of those on your shelf, I've read Power of One, which I LOVED. One of the best books I've ever read. The movie is an insult to the book though. Don't bother. Are you on Goodreads?
Catherine - I'm 25 and I'm with you on this one! I can't stand the idea of losing books; the smell, the search in Exclusive Books, the days you can spend just admiring them... My fiancee is terrified that we're going to run out of space in our house because of my addiction to books.
heather - I also love the feel of a book...we stare at a screen so much anyways...gotta give our brains something else to process:)
Cynthia Rust - I am so with you on this one!! Part of the fun of reading a book for me is marking in it. I can't read without a pen in my hand!
kendra - I am sooo with you!!! :) I LOVE books, I love the way the feel, smell, i can drop them in the water at the pool and laugh the next time I pick the book up and the pages are all messed up and I LOVE being able to let someone else borrow the book and watch it get read over and over!!
Ken - I'm 35. I like to read. I like physical books too. However, I HATE how much space they take up. I haven't bought many books over the last 5 years, I've gotten most of what I read out of the library. I was considering picking up a kindle/ipad/nook or similar device so I could start supporting authors again, without actually having to store the books. My dislike of gadgets has, so far, prevented me from doing so.
[ You aren't old, because that would mean I'm old, and I doubt that is possible. ]
Elena - I am totally with you on this one, Melissa. I love the feel of paper and turning pages. Guess I am stuck in the past and old fashioned :)
Amanda - I hear ya.
I rejected Facebook. I can't get past hand written notes in the SNAIL MAIL. I love them.
Everyone on earth is on facebook but me. Even my local grocery store is on facebook.
Call me a dinosaur, but I'm ok with it :-)
Laura - I am 25 and probably will also be one of the last people to buy a kindle. There is just nothing like holding a real book in my hands, feeling the paper...plus the hunt before hand of browsing up and down aisles looking for the next one to read...
denise karis - I was 100% with you until I got one. I hated not being comfortable reading a book - the pages flipping over on me when i crossed the halfway page, the bulk of holding it if i wanted to lay on my back and read..... but I LOVE bookstores, I love the smell too, and i love seeing a giant stack of books and thinking "I read 20 feet this year" BUT my kindle is compact, easy, i can take it anywhere, i save SO MUCH SPACE and paper.....I love it.
Sarah - I'm in the middle; digital for resources like dictionaries, concordances, commentaries and the like. But you can't go past a real book for novels and photos. I use both when it comes to the Bible though.
sofia - I agree 100%! It's such a satisfying feeling when you see the progress you've made in any book. Now, some schools have ipads for their kids so they don't "have" to use books. Tragic.
jackie g. photog - haha! first, you're NOT old, i'm 39...I'M old! i love the feel of books too, flipping pages...BUT...i got a Kindle a few months ago...and i LOVE it....especially after moving a few times and packing up all of those beloved books....not trying to convince you, but that is pretty much what broke me down...that, and ease of taking multiple books with me when traveling....
Janet - AMEN! I love being able to flip the pages of a book! And feel the different sizes and textures of paper that they're printed on! It gives each book a personality!
Chaminda - hats off to your wonderful attitude.
courtney - I 100 THOUSAND % agree with you and it's so funny you posted this today because just a few hours ago i was having this conversation with someone. I love books. I love book stores. I love the coziness of a bookstore, the smell of a bookstore, the smell of the pages of the books, turning those pages, and it's just a simpler time. I vow to never purchase an e-reader of any sort. EVER. I'd rather carry around my books. What's the point of having an e-reader that holds 100's of books, when you should only be reading one at a time anyway? Just doesn't make sense to me. LOL. Sorry for the rant...I just totally agree with you. long live books! :)
april - I love books too & swore I'd never be an e-book kinda gal. But it's SO convenient to have them on my iPhone & iPad. I used to cart several paperbacks on vacation. No more. And if I'm stuck somewhere, on in a long line, I can just pull out my phone & read. I still read real books though. You can have it both ways. :)
Michelle Sidles - I went around in circles on this one. I even polled my FB friends, which was NO help. Eventually my husband just went out and got me the Nook. I am an old fashioned book LOVER. Not liker... LOVER. The very thought of not staring at the book jacket, reading about the author on the inside flap, smelling the pages... It all seemed like so much to give up.
And yet, I've read more books in the past year on my Nook than I've read in the previous five years combined. I love my nook for ALL the reasons your sister mentioned.
So far there have been only two books that I can't give up the paper version of: The Bible (duh) and War and Peace (too much flipping back and forth to the notes in the back while reading).
I even broke down and bought my 11 year old book worm his own. And we both agree that laying in bed reading a nook is much less awkward than trying to read regular books.
But it's good. Refuse technology. I don't want real books to disappear and we need lots of people like you to keep them around. ;)
Hope Helms - I'm with you on this one! I love technology, plan to buy an iPad, etc., but nothing will ever replace the feel of having a book in my hands!
Regina White - O I love books too but I sooooooooo love my NOOK COLOR see I love it so much I had to yell it out. I love I can take it anywhere, go on the internet, read books to my son on it anywhere. O and do my little notes and highlight in it too.
Julie Prothro - I adore books, the smell, the pages, the way they get worn on the edges as you read them. Also love Cost of Discipleship, it's in the current stack of books I'm reading. :)
Libby O - I completely agree! I love books... the real thing!
Diana Carver - I was just like you... until last week! I walked into B&N and saw their new nook and kinda fell in love! hahaha So, may instead of a kindle you should get a nook! lol
mary - There is something beautiful about opening up a book. Plus I love going back to a book and seeing notes I've written or others have - things I've highlighted. I too will not succom to the Kindle or anything like it.
Heather - Oh, I am with you 100%. You'll have to pry my books from my cold, dead hands! I'm sure the Kindle is easier, but is it as satisfying and comforting to read and hold as a real book?
Michelle - My sentiments exactly!! Image book clubs where everyone brings a kindle!! Just weird!! I say NO!
kristin brown - i totally agree. a kindle does not appeal to me in the least. i hope books never die. :(
Christie - Add me to the list of old people then. I've never been a big reader until the past year. I felt a sense of accomplishment after reading Pride and Prejudice and now have 4 other Jane Austen books to read, plus Dr. Randy Carlson, and a few books by pastors. Now I have so many books on my nightstand I don't know where to start!
Lisa Green - There are pros and cons to the kindle, but I love your commitment to books.
And The Power Of One is amazing!
Betsy Jo - Oh, I love this! I have felt the same way for quite some time. And here's the dilemma: my Dad gave me his 'old' Kindle- and it sat in our basement for months. I JUST plugged it in this morning to charge it, and I'm feeling like a horrible traitor. However, I haven't acquiesced just yet. I think it's great if the Kindle creates a love of literature, but so much about reading is the feel of the book, the smell of its pages, the heft of its weight. I fear I, too, am part of the 'older' generation at 30 years old... :)
You made me smile!
Lesley - Thank you for this post! I feel the same exact way! I love curling up on the couch with a book. I even like the smell of an old book.
jamie delaine - i love you. ;) i feel the same way. the same the same the same. i really don't see a purpose!! sure they weigh less, but i LIKE BOOKS. and i'm young.
Luis Murillo - yup...I feel the same way you do about books...though I don't really read a lot of books myself.
Also film...though it's still alive but people will just go on and on about how film is dead...when it's not :)
Lauren Barchi - HAHAHA!! My thoughts exactly! I love the smell of books. It brings back memories of going to the *gasp* library. I am in my early thirties, too, so you are not alone in your Kindle aversion.
