David Burke - Will look into the Mag Mods, thanks!
Shelley Hohe - Thank you so much for sharing Melissa! I love how share about flash photography. You are so great at teaching it and I have learned so much from your blog posts! Do you or will you have a video series on how to set up OCF. I have been shooting for 8 years now, but I still get nervous when shooting with my canon 600 ex-rt's. Again, thank you so much for all you share!!!
Melissa Jill - Hi Shelley! I have an eBook that includes EVERYTHING you need to know to shoot OCF for receptions. You can find it here -- http://www.melissajill.com/photographers.cfm#ebook
Jannelle Moore - Thanks for all the great reception lighting tips. I can't wait for you to teach workshops again. I am signing up next time for sure!! Thanks for everything Melissa.
Jeff Landis - I am adding the MagMod to my needs list. Thank you!
KristeenMarie - Great post. Thank you for sharing!
I would love more info on how to shoot with your Canon 600EX-RT Speedlites in manual to do backlighting. I've got two of these flashes as well but I always struggle with the settings to get them to fire correctly in manual mode while adjusting the settings.
Melissa Jill - Hi Kristeen -- Sure thing! I give a TON of info on this, including exactly how to set up your 600EX-RTs in my eBook that you can purchase at the end of the video series I link to at the bottom of this post. It's a comprehensive resource on off-camera flash and if that is something you are wanting to master, definitely check it out!
Ashley T - Hi Melissa! Thank you for the post!
Do you use rechargeable AA's in your Speedlight? If so, what brand have you found to be your favorite.
I use Eneloop pro and have still struggled with misfires during rapid fire moments.
Melissa Jill - Hi Ashley! I do. I've tried Eneloops, but didn't have great luck with them. I use NIMH rechargeables. And I make sure to replace them yearly. But really, the Lumedyne battery pack helps a ton with eliminating misfires!
Kristina - Hi Melissa; Thanks for the tips...Do you adjust your settings on your camera so that the meter shows it is underexposed so that when you take a photo with the flash you get the background detail?
Melissa Jill - Hi Kristina -- I'm not sure what you are referring to, but if you are talking about flash compensation, I do use that and I get into it more in my video series you can opt into at the bottom of this post!
Juliana - Hi, Melissa! This is such a struggle for me! Thank you for your article! Do you use the MagMod Bounce on both flashes...on and off the camera? Have you ever used the diffuser or just the bounce? Thank you!
Melissa Jill - Hi Juliana! I only use the MagBounce on my on-camera flash. My off-camera flash is bare-bulb and pointed straight at the dance floor. I also own the diffuser and really like it as well. I think the Bounce just makes the flash light a little larger and gives you a little more control over direction, so that's why I have a preference for it.
Ashley - Great post Melissa! Reception photos are definitely our least favorite to shoot! Can't wait to watch the rest of your videos!!
Heather Baker - Melissa,
I have been dragging my feet when it comes to off camera flash, and so this post today was perfect! :)
When you use your off camera flash- one on your camera and one mounted on your stand, do you use the battery pack on the one on your camera? Or would you use it on the one that is actually firing on the stand?
Do both flashes normally fire together, or does the one on your camera just trigger the one that is on the stand?
Thanks! :)
Melissa Jill - Hi Heather! Great questions! With my off-camera flash set-up I have two battery packs -- one plugged into each.
