Jack Haddin - Like your idea regarding light handling, but the way you play with lights were fantastic simply ..
Kim - Awhh...thank you so much for the easy to understand and to the point blog post regarding wedding reception lighting! I've been searching what seems like forever to find something simple to comprehend and to put into practice, and this I can do:)
Keif - Awesome as usual. Was wondering though, do you use 1st or 2nd curtain sync and for what reason would you choose one over the other? And have you ever tried setting up your speedlites with the bounce card on the 600EXRTs to try and get softer results? Or would that not really affect anything in the long run?
Melissa Jill - Hi Denise,
To get the starburst, I just point the bare-bulb flash at a 90 degree angle and shoot into it. Are you using some type of modifier on your flash? You might need to send me a photo so I can see what you mean. It's possible you just need to turn up the flash power on your OCF. And I don't use a third flash, I just more the one if I need to.
denise karis - OK so I read your flash series like, weekly. I think it's so good but I'm still so shaky on off camera flash. I was wondering if you could tell me how you get that cute little starburst when shooting into your OCF - do you use a filter? I've been practicing and mine looks like a dumb circle. Lame! Also, do you ever use a third flash on a different channel for a particularly big reception hall or do you move that one when needed. Sorry!!! xoxoxo
Mark - MJ? I have read and re-read all your reception flash blogs and I still end with with "bright subject in a black hole" or the Off cam light is a HUGE burst and ruions the photo. HELP What were your exif data on these daddy/daughter photo?
Athena - As always, love and value your flash series and help for photogs! One thing that would be awesome for this new component on flash (like the 13 part series) if you also included your camera settings based on the room (like if the house lights are up or down, etc..) Thank you so very much! Can't wait for more.
Stephanie Barnes - Thanks for sharing Melissa! SO helpful! I am excited to see your future posts on this:)
Melissa Jill - I wish I remembered Shawna. And that's something that isn't recorded in the metadata for the image. It was most likely 1/128 that close.
Jenn -- One part of the 13-part series is dedicated to outdoor receptions! Click here: http://www.melissajill.com/blog.cfm?postID=996&flash-series-pt-outdoor-receptions
Andrea Brewster - Is it okay to make a suggestion here? I like the 13 part series. And although I'm comfortable with off-camera flash at receptions, I still refer to your series. What about offering it in workbook format or download format that can be printed? It would be a great item to add to your templates, etc!
Shawna - Great post! Thanks, Melissa! What was your flash power set to for cake cutting since it was so close?
Jenn - Thanks for sharing, Melissa! Was curious to know how you approach lighting for outdoor reception where there's little to no ambient light? Would be soooo helpful to know because it's been a real challenge for me in getting consistent results. Thanks!! :)
