I've always been a bit of a nerd. Honors student, straight A's and a full-ride scholarship to college. I console myself by thinking I was one of the cooler nerds but in the end--still a nerd. Thankfully, as an adult it becomes somewhat less mortifying to be nerdy and the word gets replaced all-together by more positive words like "ambitious," "self-disciplined" and "a go-getter!"
My nerdy side came out with gusto on my recent trip to New Hampshire. I blame the shower curtain.
I was in the shower, minding my business, doing my thing and became quickly distracted by all the brightly colored countries that brushed up against me in the form of a huge map that covered the inside of the shower curtain:

Shannon, being the super-mom that she is, put this curtain up in the kids' bathroom to help them absorb their geography. I totally loved it and it made me have this urgent need to learn my countries. But you really can't learn your countries in the span of a 10 minute shower, so I went online and searched for some quizzes to help me in my quest. Check out this great website if you're a big nerd like me. After spending some time taking the quizzes countless numbers of times, I came across another website that asks you to name as many of the 192 UN recognized countries as you can in the span of 10 minutes. Nerds like a challenge.
The first time I took it I think I only got like 80 of them. But I used my internal stick-to-it-iveness and eventually conquered! Sweet victory! And all I got for my efforts was a little encouraging pop-up window:

And of course--MOST IMPORTANTLY--the satisfaction that comes with LEARNING :). Ya, like that's really what nerds care about.
There's also another similar website where you name as many of the 50 states as you can in 10 minutes. If your nerdy-side is intrigued--definitely start here. You'll feel better about yourself :).
Oh--and if you take the country quiz--make sure to come back here and post a comment about how you did! That way I'll still be a nerd but I won't be a nerd who is all alone :).
