41. Learn how to make sticky rice (Thailand style)

This is SO exciting.

I spent a month in Thailand 10 years ago on a short-term mission trip (my friend Rhonda who is visiting was actually on my team) and I ate 3 meals exclusively for the entire month--partially because I'm not super-adventurous with food but mostly because I LOVED them so much that I didn't want to try anything else. One of them was sticky rice with Thai BBQ chicken. Sticky rice doesn't have much of a flavor to it but I just love the texture and the fact that it's fun to eat with your hands. Since I've been back, every time I go to a Thai place I try to get sticky rice but most of them don't have it :(. So when I made my 101 in 1001 list I decided to figure out how to make it myself.

I got a Thai cookbook and found out that it's actually pretty simple. You just have to go to an oriental specialty store and buy the right kind of rice. Rhonda and I went on Friday to the Lee Lee Market in Chandler and spent way too much time there looking up and down every isle. It would be helpful if the packaging actually SAID "sticky rice" but instead it says "sweet rice long grain" and both of the people we asked confirmed that it was, in fact, sticky rice.

Last night we soaked the rice overnight and wa-la! Today for lunch we feasted:
I was in heaven. I will be making this all the time.

Here's the super-easy recipe if you're interested:

2 1/2 cups sticky rice

Put the rice in a bowl or pan, cover with cold water and soak for at least 3 hours (or overnight if possible). Drain and rinse thoroughly. Line the perforated part of a steamer with a double thickness of muslin and turn the rice into it. Put water in the bottom of the steamer and steam the rice over a medium heat for 30 minutes. Turn the rice into a bowl and serve.
