A couple weeks ago I got a few questions from photographers relating to the silhouette shots I took of the Klingaman Family. Here's one in particular:
These are pretty simple. The key is to shoot them during the right time of the day (when the sun is low in the sky) and to expose for the sky, causing your subject and anything in the foreground to go black. If you want to get the defined sun flare like in the shot above, you need to close down your aperture to like 22 or something very small and that's what causes the sun to be so defined. This photo was a result of great timing--when the sun was just getting ready to go below the crest of the hill.

Silhouettes are great because no matter what, they're always different, depending on how the sky looks that day.
