Old family photos strung along a wall. DIY wedding idea.
Tell me I'm not the only one who has ever fallen into a Pinterest-and-wedding-blog coma. You know, where you click on one stunning inspiration photo, and then you blink and discover that you've been researching how to hand-embroider a wedding veil for the past three hours. That's not just me, right?

There are SO many amazing DIY projects out there that sometimes it can seem like every bride on the planet has to get her black belt in crafting before she can walk down the aisle. I'm here to tell you it's not true! You can have a wonderful, meaningful wedding even if you've never pick up a hot glue gun in your life. But if you DO want to add a little hand-crafted touch to your wedding without getting overwhelmed, I have a few suggestions. These are manageable projects that you can accomplish even if you've never heard of Martha Stewart -- haha!

A Photo Project

A photo project can be a wonderful and visually impactful DIY project for your wedding. There are so many ways to incorporate a photo project! Below left, one of my couples strung prints of their engagement photos and used them to decorate their seating chart. Below right, the same couple had one of their engagement photos printed on sticker paper and used them to customize the wine for their reception. In the photo above, old family photos were used to bring the family history into the start of the couple's new life together.

If you decide to tackle this project, I HIGHLY recommend having any old photos scanned and reprinted. Then use the reprints for your wedding decor, so that your precious originals don't get damaged.

Ring Box

A ring box can be a great way to bring a DIY touch to your wedding. It's a small, contained project, so the scope of it can't expand to overwhelm you (like creating all of your own wedding favors might). The rings hold such an important part in most wedding ceremonies that adding your personal touch to the ring box can make a big impact on your memories of the day. And as an added bonus, a ring box can be a keepsake of your wedding day that you can continue to use for years to come.

If you decide to tackle this project, I recommend spending some time wandering through your local craft store. You'll be amazed at all of the varieties of containers -- wood, glass, ceramic -- just waiting to be customized. Starting with a pre-made container takes some of the pressure off if you're usually not the crafty type.

Bonus tip: If possible, get multiples of your chosen container, so that if you mess up your first attempt at customizing it, you can just move on and try again.

Display Initials

Initials are a great way to symbolize the coming together of two people (A & B) or to recognize their new joint family name. That's one of the reasons that monograms are so popular at weddings! There are many, MANY ways to display your initials at the wedding, but I especially love the one pictured below from a holiday shoot I did with Alex of AVE Styles. Filling a hollow metal letter with greenery is a great twist on the marquee letters that are so popular right now.

If you decide to tackle this project, think about your your wedding colors and theme. You can cover the letter with fabric, or fill it with flowers, pinecones or … practically anything! It can be difficult to find the hollow letters (Land of Nod is a good source), but you can decorate wood letters for a similar effect.

So there you have it! Three projects that even the least DIY bride can take on! Just remember to plan ahead (no crafting on the night before the wedding!) and to keep your expectations realistic. You'll have so much fun pointing out your project in your wedding pictures and bragging, "I made that!"
