Joey and Brooke met in high school church youth group. The very same high school church youth group that I was a part of. They've been married for 17 years now and I knew them before they started flirting. Crazy.
Even though I've known them forever, we haven't spent a ton of time together. Mostly because 9 of those 17 years they spent living in Papua New Guinea. Brooke and Joey moved out of state and went through training with New Tribes Mission shortly after they were married, and then on to Papua New Guinea where they lived among a tribe called the Mibu. This tribe of 350 people spoke an unwritten language, had never heard the name Jesus, and thought Joey and Brooke were there to bring them the secret to wealth. While raising their family there, Brooke and Joey built relationships, learned the language, created an alphabet for the tribe and began to teach them God's story beginning in the book of Genesis. When they shared the gospel -- 2 years into their time there -- nearly the entire tribe responded by giving their lives to the Lord. Since then, they have been discipling this tribe, along with another couple on their team who is still living there.
A couple years ago, they moved their family back to the states, but they continue their ministry with the Mibu by traveling back to teach and continue discipleship. And since there are hundreds more tribes in PNG who still have not heard the good news of Christ, but who are writing letters, begging for someone to come teach them, they are back in the states to raise up more teams of people to go to these unreached tribes.
I love Joey and Brooke's hearts for the Lord and have been a part of their ministry by praying for them and the Mibu, and supporting the Tartaglia's financially since the beginning. I've wanted to go visit them in PNG countless times, but it never quite worked out. I'm still waiting for an opportunity though to meet my brothers and sisters there who are now living with an eternal hope!
Needless to say, I love this family and what they're about. They needed new photos for their prayer cards (cards with info about them that people put on their fridge as a reminder to pray for them) so we headed out to capture their cuteness this weekend.

In addition to their many talents, Brooke and Joey are really good at making cute kids with great hair -- Shiloh is 16, Marietta is 15 and Solomon is 13:
