Portraits

the robinson family

Meet the Robinsons. The members of this crazy family are friends of mine who are a part of my church. I say "crazy" because they're at the early-teenage-years stage and so that means that Steve and Wendy are slowly joining the ranks of sainthood. No, really Aaron, Nate and Katie are all really great kids. But they definitely keep life interesting! :)

For her birthday, Wendy asked Steve for one thing -- black & white photos of each of her kids to hang on the wall. So Steve got me in on the mission and wa-laa! The above photos are a result of a lot of hemming and hawing on the kids' part BUT I think the mission was accomplished.

On a side note--for all the photographers who are reading this, these were all shot outdoors with natural lighting. I think it's amazing how you can get a studio-lighting feel without all the cumbersome, expensive equipment. I just found a shady overhang with some good directional lighting, had the kids squat down and used my 50mm 1.4. Good stuff.

Once we got the shots Wendy was really wanting, we had a little fun with a few more portraits of the family. I love how these shots captured some of Aaron, Katie and Nate's personalities:

Steve and Wendy jumped in a few:

You guys are great! Thanks for the educational lunch at Serrano's post-shoot! :)

dixie's modeling gig

Last week RJ Kern--a photographer out of Denver--came into town and offered to do a photo shoot of me and Dixie. RJ is great--I've gotten to know him a little over the web and Skype but this is the first chance we've had to meet in person. He clearly loves photography and especially loves photographing dogs. His dog Dash has to be one of the most photographed dogs EVER.

RJ is doing some photography work for Pattern & Paw--a stylish pet accessory company out of Nashville. He does great work and Dixie was more than happy to be one of his models! Check her out:

Love this one:

RJ let Dixie pick out her own collar:

Dixie did most of the modeling work but I got in on a little of the action:

Thanks so much for a fun evening and great shoot RJ! Come visit us anytime. Dixie says, "Next time bring Dash!"

Jeff & Abby's Engagement Shoot

Yesterday I got together with Jeff and Abby in Scottsdale for their engagement shoot. These two met at work and are really sweet together. Jeff is originally from New Jersey and I love his accent! I'm really looking forward to their wedding in April!

Here are a few of my favorites from our shoot:

Thanks you two! Can't wait for April!

David & Katie's Engagement Shoot

Last night I met up with David and Katie at the Desert Botanical Gardens for their engagement shoot. These two were so much fun to shoot. We started out taking a few shots with their two little dogs--Jackson & Marley--who totally worked the camera:

Then we walked around the gardens and got more shots with just David & Katie. Here's a few of my favorites:

During the shoot we found this beauty:

Such a cute couple:

Thanks for the great shoot you two!!

Weddings by MJ

Matt & Leann

Matt and Leann got married on Saturday at Copperwynd surrounded by family and friends who clearly adore them. I really enjoyed getting to know this couple a little and getting a glimpse into their lives and love for each other.

Unfortunately, the day started out a bit rough. I met Leann and her bridesmaids at Rolf's Salon to shoot some of the preparation but was told by the manager that Rolf's no longer allows "outside photography." I was SO sad for Leann that we weren't able to capture memories from this part of the day. I have since contacted Rolf's corporate office in order to find out more about this policy and spoke with an EXTREMELY apologetic manager of human resources. She felt horrible that this happened and I was happy to find out that the manager was mistaken and that all we needed to do in order to take photos was sign a waiver. But unfortunately this didn't remedy the situation for Leann. So brides--if you're getting ready at a salon and want to be able to have photography coverage during this part of the day, it's a good idea to talk to the manager prior to your wedding in order to find out what their policy is.

Leann was such a relaxed bride. She totally rolled with the salon disappointment and focused on enjoying her day.

The colorful bouquet was supplied by Garden of Enchantment:

I loved her simple dress:

Brooke, Leann's maid of honor, experienced a bit of a champagne explosion:

Leann had such a great group of girls stand up with her:

And she looked amazing!

A few of the guests made quite the fashion statement at the ceremony:

Leann first saw Matt when her dad walked her down the isle:

The adorable ring bearer:

A few fun moments from the ceremony:

After the ceremony we snuck away for a few quick portraits:

Matt and Leann gave away wildflower seeds to their guests as favors:

The ceremony took place outside under the stars:

The Hamptons kept the party going strong all night long.

The bouquet toss was one of the best I've seen:

And the moon rose over the mountains during the reception. The guests were able to enjoy this view as they celebrated:

Matt & Leann--thanks so much for allowing me to be a part of your wedding!
